Earth Hour Lanterns

Earth Hour is this weekend! As it will fall on Sunday, our school board decided to do a board wide Earth Hour during school. As a platinum Eco school, we take this kind of thing pretty seriously. We had the lights off and blinds up almost all day, and to help us see a little bit better I made paper lanterns with the class. They were easy enough and the students loved working by the light of their very own lantern!
The students made the lanterns by decorating yellow construction paper with earth-related pictures and messages such as trees, bugs, animals, "turn off the lights", and "stop global warming." Then the students folded the paper half (hot-dog) and cut slits from the folded side to about 1 inch from the edge (I drew lines for the student to follow so they know where to cut). Then I stapled the two short sides together and and the students gave it a little squish. Finally I stapled a handle on top and the students put a battery-operated tea-candle underneath.
