Bump

This has to be one of my all-time favourite math games! All you need is the playing sheet, two dice, and two different coloured player pieces, about 20 in each colour. I also find that flat is better and you will have to stack them up to two high and I also find the game would be easier of the pieces were semi-transparent so you can see the numbers the pieces are on.

Each player takes turns rolling the dice, adding the number they rolled and putting one of their colour pieces on the number they rolled. If a player rolls a number which already has the other player's piece on it, they get to "bump" the other player off and take the spot. If a player rolls a number which already has one of their pwn pieces on it, they get to put a second piece on top which "locks down" the spot, making it so if the other play rolls that number they cannot bump the player off, it is their spot until the end of the game. The game is over when all the spots are locked down, or until the decided upon time is up. We played 10 minute rounds because once it it down to the last spot, there is too much back and forth, players just rolling the dice trying to roll that number twice in a row. The winner is determined by which player has the most spaces covered.

I also made a second "bump" game which is played with three dice to add a little more to the game.

The students seemed to have a good time with this game as the phrases "I get to bump you!" and "Lock Down!" could be heard throughout the class.

Here is the activity sheet if anyone would like to play this themselves:

Here is my lesson plan for this game:
