Today I created a crossword puzzle for the students to do about polar bears. They had never done a crossword before so I thought this could be a fun activity to try with them.
Here is the crossword I made for them:
There is also a second page on these files which is a follow the instructions pictures which I made for the reverse side. It is a simple set of instructions of things that students must include in the picture they are to create in the box.
The instructions are that the picture must include:
One (1) mother polar bear
Two (2) polar bear cubs: One (1) cub must wear a scarf, and One (1) cub must wear a hat
One (1) polar bear den
A large piece of ice floating in the water
And A snow mountian.
This is the answer key for the crossword:

Note that question 11 is specific to our class. CandyCane is the name we gave to the polar bear we adopted as a class.
I am really happy to say that the students seemed to enjoy doing the crossword. When they were done their other work, they joined me at the front with a clip board and their chair and we read and worked through the questions together. Any students to joined later picked it up from wherever we currently were, then we went back over the questions they missed when the others had finished theirs. The students work together and bounced words off each other. At times one student new the word but could not remember what it was called and they worked together to problem solve the answer. I am please to say that I also got several comments from the students during and after having competed the crossword that it was fun and they would like me to do more of these with them.
Here are some shots of the students and I working on the crossword at the front table. The students faces have be pixelated to protect their identities.

Here is the lesson plan I made for this activity:
