This is an art I found on Pintrest that I thought was a cool idea. The idea was originally posted to Pintrest by the user adayinthelifeofthisartteacher from their blogspot article Birds and Birch Trees by Jen.
Materials:
- Bird stencils / Tracers
- Construction paper
- White printer paper
- Pastels
- Pencil
- Black Paint
- Forks
- Glue
- Scissors
- Chalk
The birds are made by colouring a sheet of paper with various colours, we used pastels, and cutting the birds out of that. For our trees, we ripped white paper into strips and glued them onto a dark-coloured construction paper background (we used purple). Then, using the back of a fork, we painted black stripes to give the trees the appearance of having birch bark.
For the birds, I printed out the following picture from the Birds and Birch Trees article to use as stencils for the students to trace onto their paper and cut. I liked this particular sheet of birds because they are each a fun, unique shape that were not too intricate for the students to cut out on their own. They also added a present cartoon feel to the art piece. I asked the students to choose 2-4 birds for their pictures.
Here is how they turned out:

Here is the lesson plan I create for this activity:
