Today we introduced the students to simple 3-D figures: cube, cone, triangular and rectangular prism, sphere, triangle- and rectangle-based pyramid, and cylinder. After introducing the figures and going over their properties (faces, edges and vertices), I had this small challenge set up for the students. Each was given a clip board and activity sheet which had many of the figures on it with an empty box bellow it. The students were to search around the classroom for objects that were the same shape as each of the figures. In the box they were to draw a picture of it and write the name of the object.
The students seemed to have a blast hunting for the objects and I was really supersized at some of the things they were able to find which I would never have thought of. There was one figure, however, which we could not find in our class: the square-based pyramid.
Unfortunately, I cannot share pictures of this activity as they all show the students faces and bodies, but here is a list of some of the objects they found:
- Cylinder:
Air duct
Dry-erase marker
Chap stick
Garbage bin
coffee cup
- Rectangular-Base Prism:
Vent
White board eraser
Computer
Desk
Work bin
Recycling bin
iPhone
- Cone:
Pencil tip
Pylon
- Sphere:
Globe
Soccer ball
Here is the lesson plan I made for this activity:
