Mass Experiment

While we were waiting for the the leaves to dye the liquid in our Why do Leaves Change Colour Experiment, I did a mass experiment with the class, very similar to the capacity experiment we did yesterday. I made up a sheet with three columns: in the first columns was a picture of an object, the second column was their "prediction" and the third column was the "result".

I did two of the objects with the class the same way we did the capacity lesson: I showed the students the object, they write down their prediction of how many cubes will equal its weight, I put it on the scale, they counted as I stacked on cubes and we recorded the result. The first one we did was the scissors.

The second one we did was a book. For the book I went around to each student with the book and a cube and asked them to hold out their hand. When I placed the objects in each hand I gave them a second to compare the weights before they made their predictions. The class was surprised when they had to count to 48 cubes for the book.
After this, I split the groups up into groups and gave each group a scale to work on the rest of the page. The last row the students were able to have a bit of fun with as I left it blank for them each to do it on an object from with the classroom. Here are some pictures of their experiments:
