Today, with Thanksgiving being this weekend, I wanted to make apple pies with the class. My teacher thought it was a good idea and we could then have a class feast with the pies we made. We also needed a way to incorporate the curriculum into it so we decided to introduce mass into it - this is why I did the mass introduction game with them yesterday (see October 6th Mass Game lesson). The students made two large pies as a class and one individual mini 5" pie to take home and share with their families. While making the large pies the students had to measure and mix the ingredients and they also weighed them against each other. I asked them first to guess which one would weigh more and then we tested it out using a scale. We compared apples to dry ingredients, sugar to spices, crust to apples, and a whole apple to the dry ingredients (this one was interesting because the dry ingredients was larger than the apple so the students were surprised when the apple weighed more). While these were baking I invited the students to the back in groups of 6 and they each had a part to do in mixing the filling and each got to pour it into their pie shell and create a leaf top from the pie crust.

After lunch when the pies were done we organized the desks into a long row and decorated it with a long able cloth and leaves. We divided the pies up and added vanilla ice cream. All the students tried the pie, and most liked it. You cannot expect all 19 children to enjoy apple pie; I know I never liked apple pie as a kid - I was a pumpkin pie girl. the strdents were also very excited to take home their mini pies to show their family what they had made.

Here are some pictures from while we were making the large pies:

And here are the final pies and the Turkey's from Wednesday they took home with it
