Today I led a small follow-up math game in small groups of three about weight while the rest of the class did seat work. this game was based on yesterday's math lesson where they learned about “more than” and “less than”. It will also act as an introduction and preparation for my activity tomorrow where they will be making apple pies and weighing the ingredients against each other (see October 7th Apple Pie lesson).
The game consisted of three rounds using two connecting cubes and paper bags. One bag had the number 6 on it with 6 connecting cubes inside. The other bag had a question mark and I put a random amount of cubes in it and asked the students which bag was heavier, which had more cubes and how many cubes they thought were in the bag. Each student made a guess and I did three rounds so each student had a turn to count how many cubes were in the mystery bag. I also did a bonus fourth round where they each found an object from around the class and weighed them against each other. I then had them tell me which item from the three weighed the most and the least.
Unfortnately I do not have any pictures from this activity, but I really enjoyed doing it and the students seemed to enjoy it as they left the game to tell their friends "that was so much fun,
