Drum Fit
February 19th, 2017 | Kaitlyn Straub
DumbFit is a company which has developed a program incorporating drumming and aerobics for all ages. In DrumFit, each participant is given an aerobics ball and a set of drum sticks. The class is lead by a DrumFit instructor as the participants drum on the balls, on the ground and move around the space. By the end of the class every participant has had a hard, but fun and musical cardio work out.

DrumFit was started in Waterloo Ontario as a program offered only to schools as a day-event for each class, but the demand from parents and teachers lead them to begin introducing the program into gyms across Southern Ontario and the United States. They travel to elementary, middle and high schools for all grades from kindergarten through grade 12 and the class is formatted to each grades physical abilities.

The theory behind DrumFit is that students need to be physically active in order to be mentally active and research can back this up. Bunketorp Käll, Malmgren, Olsson, Lindén, and Nilsson (2015) among many other have proven that "physical activity has beneficial effects on cognition and physical and mental health" (p. 704).
